Mechanics Hall Worcester

Mechanic's Hall Worcester

Creating a multichannel messaging program to create new visibility and enhancing communication

The Hall was created by the technical innovators of their day, and wire industrialist Ichabod Washburn, head of the Worcester Mechanics Association, created a state of the art building in 1857 featuring air conditioning and superior accoustics. The 21st century Hall management continue to innovate by implementing a multi-channel messaging program proposed by Edward Malouf, as a principal at Content•Design. The design brief was to create a revitalized Main Street presence through controllable facade lighting, digital and environmental messaging, and improved public-facing information systems.

MHW Illuminated facade

Lighting up Main Street

The first phase of the Main Street program was a controllable facade lighting program. The design was developed with Available Light, and it utilized the Lumenpulse system. Here the staff at the Hall adjusted the lighting to welcome a College of the Holy Cross graduating class, who held their reception at the Hall.

Main Street messaging units

Main Street messaging units

The Main Street Project was capped off by the installation of the two exterior messaging units that replaced the original poster cases.

Inner lobby

Inner Lobby Wayfinding and new Grand Staircase Gallery

In addition to the digital messaging units, the inner lobby gained a new changing picture gallery to convey the breadth of the Hall’s performers and history. New directional signage pointed visitors to the ticket booth.

Promenade environmental graphics

Promenade Messaging System

The environmental graphics scope included eight large display cases along the promenade. We took this opportunity to highlight Hall performers —famous opera singer Lamartine Price and Indian dancers are among those featured. This sends the message about the Hall's diverse performers.
