WPI Hall of Luminaries

WPI Hall of Luminaries

Honoring the technical Luminaries of Worcester Polytechnic Institute

The third floor of the Rubin Student Center at WPI is one of the most active places on campus. A nexus for students—there are two large conference halls and four circular lecture rooms, plus seating for students to socialize or study. Our design challenge; how to take advantage of this concentration of students and inspire them with the achievements of Alumni such as inventor Dean Kamen or engineering leader Judy Nitsch? Our team, lead by Trivium Interactive, was provided a visual identity, the Luminaries, and we proceeded to develop the environmental and media concepts.

Project title: Lead Designer for Exhibit, User Experience, and Graphics; Construction Manager

Responsibilities

  • User experience flow
  • Environmental graphics program
  • Award product design
  • Individual inductee plaque design and 13-year program

Hall of Luminaries

Shown above, the third floor of the WPI Rubin Student Center transformed into a special place to honor Alumni.

Shown left, our integrated media interactive required a "cool factor" to impress both alumni like Dean Kamen and current tech-savvy alike. A dampened dry-contact disk controls a projector tucked into the ceiling above. I worked with Trivium Interactive to establish the user requirements, which included user testing in the studio.

Drawing on the talents of the illustrator Kathryn Rathke, I commissioned her to create the inductee's portraits. This solved a typical problem of missing or poor quality image sources for the alumni being depicted. The individual plaques pop-though a rear-illuminated wall panel. DesignFab42 did an excellent job detailing and installing these walls. My study of the available wall space accommodates the awards program through 2030.

The Luminarie Award

With technical innovation as the prime criteria for each element of the program, the award uses a solar-powered LED to create an illuminated award.
